OPENCALL | Vertico Greenfield Residency 2025

1. Introduction
Welcome to the Vertico Greenfield Residency 2025. We are delighted to open the doors to our workshop once again and welcome academic institutions to take part in the second edition of the Greenfield Residency.
This initiative is especially designed for (assistant) professors or studio supervisors together with student groups who may not normally have access to robotic fabrication technology. Whether you are working with concrete printing or other digital manufacturing techniques, we’re here to support your ideas and help turn them into reality.
We believe innovation should be accessible, and we are excited to offer our time, space, and expertise to students and supervisors eager to learn, experiment, and create.
2. Our Goals
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹 of this Open Call is to provide students with hands-on experience in the real-world application of robotic manufacturing. Participants will have the chance to work directly with our advanced robotic systems for 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸, gaining invaluable practical skills and seeing their projects come to fruition.

3. Brief (introduction)
Submitted projects should be innovative and must utilize our robotic systems for production. While Vertico specializes in 3D concrete printing, we welcome projects that experiment with different manufacturing processes, provided they require the use of our robot. This Open Call is not limited to concrete printing alone - other manufacturing methods and materials are also encouraged, as long as they can be integrated with our robotic capabilities. However, you can use our concrete printing equipment if you so desire.
The intent is to have (assistant) professor with a group of students from an institution of higher education to work on a project, or several smaller projects, together. A tutor should be present to guide the students in the use of the equipment. Support will be provided by Vertico, but prior knowledge of robotics is key to successful completion. Vertico provides only the acces to the machinery, on site safety support and limited online support for robotics. It is preferable to have a group of students from the same workshop or course of the institution.

4. First Edition. Greenfield Residency 2024
The first edition of the Greenfield Residency took place in 2024 and welcomed a team from Cairo University, led by Professor Noeman. Their project focused on Laplacian growth, using a custom algorithm to translate natural branching patterns into a parametric bench design. Throughout the week, the students worked hands-on with Vertico’s robotic systems, navigating real-world challenges like non-planar slicing and structural optimization.

Although the final assembly was not successful, due to the structural misscalculations, the experience proved to be deeply valuable - highlighting the importance of practical testing, collaboration, and adapting design to fabrication realities. It was a week of creative problem-solving, learning through doing, and laying the foundation for what we hope will become a yearly tradition.

5. Eligibility
The Vertico Greenfield Residency is open exclusively to academic institutions. We accept applications only from university or college professors, assistant professors, or studio supervisors who will lead a group of students working on an academic project.
Unfortunately, individual applications from students will not be considered. Our goal is to support institutions that do not typically have access to large-scale robotic fabrication equipment, and to offer their students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a professional setting.
We welcome participants from all over the world and encourage diverse and creative proposals from across disciplines.
