From Ancient Oceans to Future Myths: Microbiocene Sculpture at Artis Zoo
Microbiocene: Ancient Ooze to Future Myths, one of Vertico's first projects, has found a new home at ARTIS in Amsterdam. Vertico printed the monument in 2018 for the artist duo Baum & Leahy.
The work celebrates the "Microbiocene," a speculative era centered on the impact microbes have had, and will have, on our world.
Sea sediment and microglyphs
Baum & Leahy designed the monument in collaboration with the NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research. It brings together ancient marine microbiology and 3D concrete printing.
The sculpture is made with sea sediment, a reference to deep-ocean microfossils that reveal past environmental conditions. Its intricate, bio-inspired shapes carry a "microglyph" language.
Together they link the ancient world with speculative futures and ask visitors to reflect on our relationship with the microbial ecosystems that sustain us.
