The bone test: finding the limits of our material through destructive testing

Our latest experiment continues to explore how moisture impacts cracking in 3D concrete prints! To carry out these tests we designed a test geometry to effectively analyze where and how cracks form. The setup includes two anchor points on either side and a deliberate discontinuity in the middle—creating a controlled weak point where cracks are most likely to occur. This test has been lovingly labeled the ‘bone test’ by our friends at Sika. We have used it to compare shrinkage behavior between many different materials and suppliers.

In this video, you’ll see the same conditions we talked about in our previous post. We generated a water vapor environment that surrounds the print, increasing the humidity and preventing shrinkage cracks by keeping the surface moist. This fog-like effect not only looks cool but plays a key role in our efforts to optimize printing conditions for stronger, more durable prints.
